Exploring Isle Royale National Park was added to my bucket list the moment I learned of this unique and iconic wilderness treasure located in the western end of Lake Superior. Rich in flora and fauna, it is the least visited national park owing to an isolated location accessible only by boat or sea plane. Son-in-law Brian and his sister Katy invited me to join them for an early September backpacking trip across the island. We chose to access the park via seaplane in lieu of the 6-hour long ferry ride from the Michigan mainland. Our original departure was delayed a day due to fog and low visibility but we managed to take flight the following day. This short video captures the exciting traverse by sea plane from Houghton, Michigan to Rock Harbor, Isle Royale on September 3, 2018.
